Women in Taraba State have been urged to strengthen unity, collaboration, and active participation in societal development as part of efforts to advance opportunities for women and girls.
The call was made during the 2026 celebration of International Women’s Day at the Jolly Nyame Stadium Jalingo organized under the umbrella of the National Council of Women's Societies (NCWS) in the state.
In her welcome address, the President of the NCWS Taraba State Chapter, Mercy Daniel Garba, described the celebration as a moment for reflection on the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of women to societal growth and development.
She noted that the theme of this year’s celebration, “Give to Gain,” highlights the need for women to make deliberate contributions toward achieving meaningful progress, inclusion, and empowerment in their communities.
According to her, the various affiliate groups under the NCWS platform understand that collective strength lies in the different roles women play across communities, institutions, and families.
Garba explained that when women contribute their time, skills, unity, and commitment to service, they help build stronger communities and institutions while expanding opportunities for women and girls.
She further reminded participants that the gathering was not only a celebration but also a call to action for women’s groups and affiliate societies to deepen collaboration and expand their impact at the grassroots level.
Garba also emphasized the need for women to uphold integrity, accountability, and excellence in all their engagements, noting that these values are essential in promoting sustainable development and inclusion.
In her remarks, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Taraba State Chapter, Janet Nyajon, assured participants of the commitment of women journalists to promote adequate media coverage of issues affecting women and their development.
Nyajon, who was represented by the association’s Secretary, Doris Filbert, encouraged women to speak up on issues affecting them and actively participate in politics and decision-making processes.
She noted that increased participation of women in leadership and governance would help promote policies that address gender inequality and improve the welfare of women and families.
Also speaking, the Chairperson of the Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN) in Taraba State, Alice Nuhu, commended the organizers of the event for their commitment to celebrating and promoting the role of women in society.
Nuhu encouraged women to take active interest in politics, stressing that greater involvement in governance would enable them to contribute meaningfully to policy formulation and community development.
Participants at the event were also encouraged to share ideas and develop strategies that would inspire greater participation, inclusiveness, and empowerment for women across the state.
The celebration concluded with goodwill messages and prayers for unity, peace, and continued progress for women in Taraba State and Nigeria at large.
