Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has approved the release of more than three billion naira to address the demands of staff unions at Taraba State University, in a move aimed at resolving the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The governor announced the intervention during a visit to the university on Thursday, March 12, 2026, where he met with union leaders and management in a bid to secure a lasting solution to the prolonged industrial action that has disrupted academic activities at the institution.
As part of the arrangement, Kefas approved the immediate release of N200 million, with an additional N100 million to be paid monthly beginning from April until the outstanding obligations to the unions are fully settled.
To underscore his commitment to the agreement, the governor, who serves as Visitor to the university, signed documents authorising the payment of the funds in the presence of the Chairman of ASUU, Mbave Joshua Garba, alongside other union leaders.
The financial approval is expected to clear accumulated entitlements owed to both academic and non-academic staff unions of the institution.
With the governor’s intervention, stakeholders are optimistic that the industrial action will soon be called off, paving the way for the resumption of academic activities in the university in the interest of students.
Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee of the unions has scheduled a congress for 4 p.m. on Thursday, where members are expected to deliberate on the development and possibly decide on the suspension of the strike.
