The Taraba State Government, in partnership with Agroforestry Impact and Regeneration (AIR), has launched a 60-day intensive training programme on regenerative agroforestry for cocoa farmers in Abong, Kurmi Local Government Area.
The initiative is designed to equip cocoa growers with modern, sustainable farming techniques aimed at improving soil fertility, boosting yields, and reducing the incidence of pests and diseases. Organisers say the programme will significantly enhance productivity and livelihoods among farmers in Kurmi and surrounding communities, while promoting environmental sustainability.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the African Director of AIR and lead facilitator, Mr. Francis Bosah, commended Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas for the state government’s support in advancing agricultural innovation and sustainability. He also acknowledged the contributions of the traditional institution, particularly the Paramount Ruler of Tigun Chiefdom, represented by the Abong District Head, Mr. Christopher Finya Yarafa, for his commitment to community development and agricultural growth.
Bosah noted that regenerative agroforestry practices play a critical role in restoring degraded lands, conserving biodiversity, and strengthening ecosystem services. He added that the training aligns with the state’s broader environmental agenda, which includes the planting of two million economic trees across nine local government areas as part of efforts to combat climate change and drive economic empowerment.
The event attracted key stakeholders from government and the agricultural sector, including a representative of the Deputy Governor’s office, Mr. Ebeshi I. Danga; the President of AIR, Mrs. Diana Doheny; and the Chairman of the Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria (Taraba State chapter), among others.
Organisers described the turnout as impressive and encouraged wider participation, noting that the training is open not only to cocoa farmers but also to individuals interested in soil management and sustainable agricultural practices.
The programme is expected to leave a lasting impact on agricultural productivity in Taraba State, while contributing to long-term environmental conservation and food security.
