The Chief Executive Officer of Women of Valour Initiative for Development and Empowerment (WOVAIDE), Mrs. Sarah David Ibi, has called on employers across the country to create safe and respectful work environments for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, stressing that shielding them from sexual harassment is key to enabling them serve the nation diligently and without fear.
Mrs. Ibi made the appeal during a sensitisation session for Batch B, Stream I corps members currently undergoing training at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Sibre, Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Highlighting the devastating consequences of sexual harassment, the facilitator noted that victims often suffer physical trauma, sleep deprivation, financial strain, and severe mental and emotional distress, which can negatively impact their productivity and overall well-being.
> "Workplaces must rise above entrenched discriminatory attitudes towards women and end the culture of stigmatisation that often silences victims. Combating sexual harassment is a shared responsibility that should not be left to advocacy groups alone," she said.
Mrs. Ibi reiterated WOVAIDE’s commitment to defending the rights of victims and urged corps members to speak out and report any incidents of harassment without fear of retaliation. She warned that tolerating such abuses not only endangers individual corps members but also undermines the integrity of the national service scheme.
The facilitator commended the NYSC for prioritising the safety and welfare of corps members by incorporating sexual harassment awareness into orientation activities. She also expressed appreciation to the NYSC Taraba State Coordinator for partnering with WOVAIDE to deliver the training.
The sensitisation session, which included an interactive question-and-answer segment, was co-facilitated by WOVAIDE partner, Mr. Friday Matamba Abot. Participants were provided with practical tips on identifying, preventing, and responding to sexual harassment in both formal and informal work environments.
Mrs. Ibi urged all stakeholders government agencies, private employers, community leaders, and civil society organisations to take proactive measures in ensuring that corps members serve in safe, respectful, and harassment-free spaces.
