The Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria (SCIAN), Taraba State Chapter, has stepped up advocacy efforts for improved welfare and inclusion of persons living with spinal cord injuries through a strategic visit to the Taraba State Ministry of Social Justice.

The delegation, led by the State Chairperson of SCIAN, Hon. Mary James Gaisa, alongside the Chairman of SCIAN in Ussa Local Government Area, Mr. Felix Rika, met with the Honourable Commissioner for Social Justice, Dr. Filister Irarimam Musa, to explore areas of collaboration and government support for people living with spinal cord injuries across the state.

Speaking during the visit, Hon. Gaisa said the engagement was aimed at strengthening institutional partnership and drawing government attention to the urgent needs of spinal cord injury survivors, including access to healthcare, rehabilitation services, mobility support, empowerment programmes, and social protection schemes.

She noted that many persons with spinal cord injuries face mobility barriers, discrimination, and economic hardship, stressing that deliberate inclusive policies and targeted interventions are necessary to improve their quality of life.

According to her, the association is committed to working with relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure that disability-inclusive programmes are not only designed but effectively implemented at both state and local government levels.

In her response, the Commissioner for Social Justice, Dr. Filister Irarimam Musa, assured the SCIAN delegation that the ministry would give due consideration to their requests and proposals. She reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to promoting social inclusion and protecting the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities in Taraba State.

The meeting highlighted the growing push for structured disability support frameworks in the state, especially following the recent signing into law of the Taraba State Persons with Disability Commission Bill by Governor Agbu Kefas — a move widely regarded by stakeholders as a major milestone in disability rights and inclusive governance.

Observers say the collaboration between SCIAN and the Ministry of Social Justice is expected to open new channels for advocacy, data-driven planning, and targeted intervention programmes for spinal cord injury survivors and other persons with disabilities across Taraba State.

Kurmi on the Brink: Why Silence Now Could Spell Disaster

By The Nigerian Newspointer Editorial Board In the quiet hills and lush forests of Kurmi Local Government Area of Taraba State, an uneasy wind is blowing. Reports of an unusual influx of Fulani and Hausa migrants fleeing violence in Northern Nigeria have unsettled the peace of this agrarian enclave. Migration in itself is not new—men and women have always moved in search of safety, trade, and survival. But what is happening in Kurmi today bears markers that Nigeria has, sadly, seen before. And if urgent steps are not taken, the consequences could be dire. A Pattern Too Familiar From Plateau to Benue, from Southern Kaduna to Zamfara, Nigeria’s troubled history is littered with stories of migration that started innocently but later spiraled into violent conflicts. Farmers and herders once lived in uneasy but manageable coexistence until land sales, unchecked settlements, and political silence turned simple disputes into ethnic conflagrations. The echoes of those past crises are now knock...
