Games masters in Taraba State have been urged to cultivate friendly and supportive relationships with young athletes to enhance their sports development and overall performance.
The call was made by a member of the Taraba State Sports Development Commission and former Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Abubakar Sadiq Moyoyo, during a two-day seminar for games masters of primary and secondary schools within Jalingo metropolis. The seminar was held at the Jolly Nyame Stadium, Jalingo.
Presenting a paper titled “Positive Impact of the Games Masters–Child Athletes Relationship in Primary and Secondary Schools in Taraba State,” Moyoyo said games masters play critical roles in mentoring young athletes and nurturing their interest in sporting activities.
He identified key traits expected of games masters to include being supportive, encouraging and serving as positive role models capable of providing young athletes with the guidance and motivation needed for self-development.
According to him, young athletes who receive proper mentorship and guidance from their games masters are more likely to excel and record improved performances in their respective sports.
Moyoyo also stressed the need for government support to strengthen grassroots sports development, calling for increased moral, financial and material assistance to schools and individuals involved in talent identification and development across the state.
The resource person outlined the responsibilities of the Taraba State Sports Development Commission in strengthening the games masters–child athlete relationship, including promoting sports development, capacity building, provision of infrastructure and community engagement.
He reiterated that a healthy relationship between games masters and child athletes is vital to shaping athletic development, emotional well-being and academic performance of pupils and students in primary and secondary schools.
Moyoyo added that with sustained government support in terms of funding, facilities and motivation, sports development at the grassroots would become more effective and result-oriented in Taraba State.
