By Jako Keke, January 12, 2026.
Troops of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have recorded another major breakthrough in the ongoing Operation Peace Shield with the arrest of two suspected gun runners in Taraba State.
The arrests followed a coordinated, intelligence-led operation carried out on January 11, 2026, in collaboration with operatives of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), aimed at dismantling illegal arms trafficking networks operating within the state.
The first suspect, identified as Mr Christopher Adamu, also known as “Suffer”, aged 48, was apprehended at Sebos Joint, Mayo Dasa General Area in Jalingo Local Government Area. According to preliminary investigations, Adamu is actively involved in the illegal arms trade.
Items recovered from him include a hunter’s identification card, two ATM cards, a National Identification Card, an Itel keypad mobile phone, six rings, a hand band, and assorted charms, all believed to be linked to his criminal activities.
During interrogation, Adamu reportedly confessed to working with an accomplice known as “Chmn” from Shomo Gari, Karim Lamido Local Government Area.
Acting on fresh intelligence obtained from the first arrest, troops subsequently tracked and arrested a second suspect, Mr James Yangyang, aged 37, at Tautre Village on the outskirts of Anguwan Bera in Ardo Kola Local Government Area.
Further investigation revealed that Adamu had allegedly sold an AK-47 rifle to one Mr Bazoe John of Murbai Village, Ardo Kola LGA, in November 2025, confirming the existence of a wider arms supply network within the state.
Both suspects are currently in military custody undergoing further investigation and will be handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution upon the conclusion of preliminary inquiries.
Reacting to the development, the Commander 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 OPWS, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the troops and intelligence operatives for their professionalism, vigilance and effective collaboration in disrupting criminal networks.
Brigadier General Uwa issued a stern warning to criminals and their collaborators, stressing that the brigade would not relent in its efforts to rid Taraba State of illegal arms dealers and other criminal elements.
“6 Brigade will not relent in its resolve to rid Taraba State and its environs of illegal arms dealers and all forms of criminal elements. Those aiding, abetting or collaborating with criminals, whether within or outside the state, should desist immediately or be ready to face the full weight of the law,” he said.
He further urged members of the public to continue to support the Nigerian Army and other security agencies with timely and credible information, assuring them of confidentiality and swift response to security-related tips.
