Taraba Assembly Takes First Step on Livestock Development Commission Bill, Confirms Key Appointments

By Jako.

The Taraba State House of Assembly has taken a significant legislative step with the first reading of a bill seeking to establish the Taraba State Livestock Development Commission, 2025.

The bill, forwarded to the Assembly by Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas, was presented on the floor following a motion moved by the Deputy Majority Leader, Nuhu Akila Rantiyo, allowing the Majority Leader, Jethro Yakubu Zikengyu, to lay the document before members during plenary.

Reading the Governor’s communication, Speaker John Kizito Bonzena stressed that the proposed commission would play a vital role in harnessing and expanding the state’s agricultural potential. He urged members to support the vision, which he described as a major step toward boosting Taraba’s livestock sector.

The Speaker thereafter directed the Clerk of the House, Salmuna Amos Sani, to take the first reading of the bill in line with legislative procedure and refer it to the Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative action.

In a related development, the Assembly passed into law the Taraba State House of Assembly Service Commission Amendment Bill, 2025. The bill’s passage followed a motion by Majority Leader Jethro Yakubu Zikengyu, after which members consented and the Speaker ordered the Clerk to prepare a clean copy for the Governor’s assent.

Bonzena thanked members, technical experts, and sponsors for their contributions, noting that the amendment would strengthen the institution’s efficiency.

Also during plenary, the House confirmed the appointments of Shehu Usman Magaji as State Auditor-General for Local Government, Adamu Mohammed as a member of the Taraba State Audit Commission, and Tanimu Tella John as State Surveyor-General.

Their confirmation followed the presentation of reports by the Vice Chairman, Committee on Public Accounts, Akila Nuhu Rantiyo, and Chairman, Committee on Transport, Disaster Management, Land and Survey, John Lamba. The committees, after scrutinizing the nominees during earlier screenings, recommended them as qualified for the roles.

Following unanimous approval by members, the Speaker directed the Clerk to formally notify Governor Kefas of the Assembly’s resolution.

Kurmi on the Brink: Why Silence Now Could Spell Disaster

By The Nigerian Newspointer Editorial Board In the quiet hills and lush forests of Kurmi Local Government Area of Taraba State, an uneasy wind is blowing. Farmers and herders once lived in uneasy but manageable coexistence until land sales, unchecked settlements, and political silence turned simple disputes into ethnic conflagrations. The echoes of those past crises are now knock...
