Strike:NLC, TUC Declare Indefinite Strike in Taraba Over Alleged Illegality by Biometric Committee

By Jako, August 6, 2025

Organized labour in Taraba State, under the auspices of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has declared an indefinite strike action set to commence on Monday, August 11, 2025.

This was made known in a joint statement signed by Comrade Peter Jediel, Chairman of the NLC Taraba State Council, and Comrade Abasu Sule, Chairman of the TUC Taraba State Council. The notice, dated August 6, 2025, followed a resolution reached at the Joint State Administrative Council meeting held earlier in the day.

According to the statement, the strike action is in response to the alleged illegalities perpetrated by the Biometric Data Capture Committee, which labour claims has violated agreed procedures in collaboration with other stakeholders.

The leadership of both unions was mandated to "take all necessary action to effectuate the ultimatum" issued previously over the matter.

Key resolutions of the organized labour include:

A formal declaration of the strike to commence from the early hours of Monday, August 11, 2025.

Immediate mobilization of all union members across the state.

A call on all workers, civil society organizations, and the general public to make adequate provisions at home in preparation for the industrial action.

The release also directed all units and branches of affiliated unions within the NLC and TUC, as well as civil society groups, to establish strike implementation committees to ensure effective coordination in all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).

Labour leaders urged workers to remain vigilant and await further directives as the situation unfolds.

The development has raised concerns across the state, with many residents bracing for the impact of the looming shutdown on essential services.
