Bsc/HND dichotomy remains until Civil service reform is completed.Although the Nigerian government is committed to removing the dichotomy between BSc and HND holders, the dichotomy will remain until an ongoing review of the Scheme of Service is completed, an official suggested on Wednesday. Currently, Nigerian polytechnic graduates are awarded HND while university graduates are awarded BSc or its equivalent. However, HND holders are often discriminated against when joining or exiting the public service as they are placed at a level below their BSc counterparts. Many Nigerians including the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) have called for the removal of that dichotomy and the federal government has expressed its interest in doing so. President Buhari replaces nominated CEO of Petroleum agency. President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Farouk Ahmed as Chief Executive Officer of the board of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NPRA). Mr Ahmed, according to the president, will replace Sarki Auwalu, who was earlier named for the position. The president had in a letter dated September 16, sought the Senate’s approval of Mr Auwalu’s appointment. The president’s latest announcement was conveyed in a letter to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, as he sought the Senate’s approval of the new appointment. The appointment comes barely three days after PREMIUM TIMES reported concerns by some Nigerians that some powerful individuals were plotting to get their favourite candidate to head the upstream petroleum regulatory agency. ✍️✍️

Gombe State Deputy Governor, Manassah Jatau, has declared open a two-day conference of state directors of State Security Service of the North East sub-region geared towards tackling security challenges in the zone. Declaring the conference open in Gombe, Jatau challenged the state directors of the Service to proffer solutions that would tackle security challenges confronting the North East and the country in different forms, methods and trends. Lawsuits in London and New York have shed light on how fees trading firms paid agents to win oil contracts from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) may have been used to fund the country’s past two general elections, Bloomberg reports. Quoting filings in a suit filed by an ex-employee of the British oil giant, BP Plc, Bloomberg reported that $300,000 and $900,000 were paid to intermediaries in 2014 and 2018 as part of the lobby for lucrative contracts, with the funds said to be funnelled into electioneering activities. ✍️✍️
